About Oracea®

Oracea® (doxycycline, USP) is the first and only oral therapy approved by the FDA to treat the inflammatory lesions (red bumps, blemishes, and pustules) of rosacea.

Sometimes living with rosacea can be challenging—but there is good news for people with this condition. Although rosacea cannot be cured, once-daily Oracea®, the first and only oral therapy, is available to help reduce the bumps and pimples of rosacea and help get your condition under control. It is important to first talk with your dermatologist to explore and discuss the treatment options available. The sooner you begin treatment for rosacea, the better. Knowledge is your best defense. Click on the links below to discover important facts about Oracea® for rosacea. Then ask your doctor if Oracea® is right for you.

Important Safety Information:
ORACEA® is indicated for the treatment of only inflammatory lesions (papules and pustules) of rosacea in adult patients. You may experience intestinal upsets, sore throat or sinus infections/sinusitis when taking Oracea®. Do not take Oracea® if you are allergic to tetracyclines. Oracea® may cause harm to a developing fetus; so do not take Oracea® if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. As with other tetracyclines, you should stay out of direct or artificial sunlight, and make sure you tell your doctor if you have stomach or GI problems, kidney disease, have a yeast or fungal infection, take blood thinners, take oral contraceptives, or take medicine to treat acne, psoriasis or seizures.

Oracea® does not treat bacterial infections. To minimize the risk of developing bacterial resistance, Oracea® should be used only as prescribed by your doctor.

You are encouraged to report negative side effects of prescription drugs to the FDA. Visit www.fda.gov/medwatch or call 1-800-FDA-1088.

Oracea® is effective
Once-daily Oracea® is an oral therapy that has been shown in clinical trials to be safe and effective for the treatment of the inflammatory lesions (red bumps, blemishes, and pustules) of rosacea. Oracea® treats the bumps and pimple-like blemishes of rosacea. It will not lessen the facial redness caused by this condition.

Many patients treated with Oracea® in clinical trials started to see improvements in about 3 to 4 weeks, with improvements continuing through 16 weeks of treatment.
Oracea® is different
Oracea® is unique because it contains a dose of doxycycline below that needed to treat infections. Instead, Oracea® works to curb inflammation – a key factor in rosacea. Unlike traditional doxycyclines, Oracea® doesn’t work by killing bacteria. This is important because:
  • Rosacea is a long-term (chronic) inflammatory condition
  • Most doctors believe that Rosacea is not caused by bacteria or other microbes
  • Antibiotic doses of doxycyclines and tetracyclines can lead to the development of bacterial resistance
  • Studies have not shown Oracea® to contribute to antibiotic resistance
Oracea® is convenient
Oracea® provides 24-hour anti-inflammatory control of your rosacea in a convenient once-daily capsule. Generally Oracea® is taken in the morning with a full glass of water. Be sure to take Oracea® exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
Oracea® is safe and well-tolerated
Oracea® has been proven safe for up to 9 months and its side effect profile was similar what has been observed in previous clinical trials.

Your doctor has prescribed Oracea® to treat your rosacea’s bumps and blemishes. Be aware that there are no equivalent generic medications for Oracea®, and using more than prescribed will not make it work faster and may lead to additional side effects.

Patients treated with Oracea® in clinical trials reported side effects such as soreness in the nose and throat (nasopharyngitis), diarrhea, and sinus infection, but most of these side effects were mild. Be sure to discuss any concerns you may have with your doctor. Also, be sure to tell your doctor if you have kidney disease, take blood thinners or take medicines to treat acne, psoriasis or seizures, or if you are pregnant or nursing. And to tell your doctor if you have had allergic reactions to tetracyclines in the past.
